reassembled; still no joy

Original problem still - supply side apparently not working. Completely primed; given gravity feed. I cleaned the vane pump well, lubricated, reassembled properly. Will try other pump once I get that cleaned out, but will have to replace the good head from the other pump. What about the pressure rel...

re: installation of rocker arm piece

I'd just like to add one thing that Fatmobile just mentioned: one you've eased the part down into place, with the help of a flat-blade knife - as was mentioned, look at the placement of the springs. I just did the operation you were asking about and noticed that the springs weren't straight. I used ...

Head plunger

What I meant by "head plunger" was "distributor piston"; that's what's broken. I think my extra pump has a good one.

Problem/s found!

Thanks again for your advice. I think I've found the problem/s with my pump after some thorough digging. I was, previously, too timid to take the pump entirely apart, since it took specialized tools and I've been told, by experts, that even if I'd managed to rebuild the thing I still wouldn't be abl...

What I've done so far!

I've removed the plunger from the solenoid and screwed it back in, although the solenoid works - just did it to be sure. I've filled the pump with fuel, loosened the OUT bolt at the top - even though I'd made sure it was clear by blowing through it, I've refilled the pump with fuel by purging the ai...

Diesel Injection Pump '85 1.6L VW, suddenly not pumping

Car got me to work just fine and me bro had to tow me home. Leaving work, car got me to the freeway, then lost power and would only idle with much hesitation and restarts required; idled my way a mile when a Stater came and pushed me to the bus stop. Took stop solenoid plunger out, screwed solenoid ...

Diesel engine oil

The 5w-40 sounds fine, especially if it says it's for a turbe diesel truck. I can't say about the filter - usually there is a water outlet port on the bottom of the filter, if it's made for diesel applications. Pixie would like some new blood. You're doing the right thing by 'bonding' with your car....

Powerlapping

Hello Hagar, from Michael, in Seattle. I'm in the process of rebuilding my engine, for the first time, and have a question about lapping the valves. In the past, with other engines, I've usually always taken out the valve springs, fastened the end of the stem into my electric drill, applied paste to...

Instrument Panel Rebuilding

Greetings! Have any of you tried instrument panel rebuilding; is it even possible? I've an '85 Golf 1.6, here, two instrument panels - one has backlighting, good clock, no odometer/trip meter, the other has no back light (completely dark at night), no clock, but everything else works fine. I'd like t...

Odometer/Speedometer Adjustment

Greetings I'm seeking information regarding odometer/speedometer adjustment. My speedometer appears to read 40mph when the roadside speed alert sign says that I'm going 35mph. I'm concerned that my odometer is similarly out of spec. I have seen evidence of this type of problem on other postings, but...

1.6L Head Needed: 11mm block

Hi All I'm afraid I need a new head (a new brain is more like it!). My #1 valve broke and put a nice crater in the piston - doesn't go through, I'll have a machine shop give me an opinion about it. So, many of the heads I'm seeing take 12 mm head bolts -can I use one of these? My engine has CR on th...

Valves hitting Pistons?

Appologies if this is posted twice, but I couldn't find the last post. Thanx again for taking the time to help me out. I figured out the muffler clamp tool, and it works like a dream. I didn't actually use a muffler clamp, since the local auto parts place was closed, so I had to make do with a ubolt...

Filtering

Holiday Greetings to all of you fine, conscientious people. Since I have established a source for old fry-mac (as we sometimes call used restaurant grease, here in Seattle), more than my meager needs require, I am now concerned with the technology of filtering this stuff - one pale of which has a th...

Reverse lights stay on all the time

Hi All I apologize for all of the posts I've been making lately; my winter break from school is the time for car repair. When I purchased this car it had this problem - apparently, except that both of the reverse lights were burned out and the plastic around them was melted; I'll be visiting the bon...
