Here is a pic of the gasket. The little piece i had to get out of the pump w/ tweezers.
Any good tips for taking off the top half of the IP?

Changing seals on I P .
Any good tips for taking off the top half of the IP?
Yes DON'T.
Why ? -- it may not be necessary. , like changing O ring seal on distributor block , NO need to remove block.
Post type of I P and V W model car. . If you do I shall try to explain.

Mine looked like that after I had installed the control (governor) collar backwards on the distributor piston. The pump built up too much pressure (even with the solenoid stop pin removed).
