Homemade Injector Pop Tester Instructions?

Post by the vegenator »

I'd like to build a setup up similar to this:

But I've also heard that bottle jack setups are cheaper/easier (minus the welding).

Hydraulic hand pumps sell for around $25 on ebay. Anyone have any tips or know of more detailed write-ups or parts list for these testers?

There's a thread or 20 lurking on the forum on others converting a bottle jack to pop tester. Coke, where did the homemade tools thread go?
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

Andrew's version:

Note that he went back and replaced *all* the brass with proper hydraulic fittings... smart man!

brass fittings will split... if you happen to be holding the connection when the brass splits, you might inject diesel at 2000 psi into your finger. the medical treatment is to remove the finger, no kidding.

use only hydraulic fitting, as Vince says. they are MUCH MUCH stronger and can resist several thousand PSI pressures. brass fittings are meant for under 200 PSI.

on my Buda tester, the hydraulic unions are huge steel pieces. they didn't do this because it was pretty.

Okay, no brass fittings, gotcha.

I did a little more searching and found a great, thorough how-to, here:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/DieselInjectorTester

It seems the person that built this unit used brass fittings. He also jb welded some holes that could conceivably just have been spot-welded instead.

Andrew's will work for reference, but there's really no parts list or write-up in that page. Oh, the questions I would ask him, if he still existed in VW forum land...

Andrew is still alive [and kicking] on the racing forum, this is the economy forum. Someone threatened him digitally aparently. I can't see how abandoning this great forum, stops the threats following. I can't imagine why someone would threaten him. Surely not his ascerbic tongue!
Anyway, a simple point I'd like to make about the use of brass fittings. Their weakness depends on the component. Reducers may be more than strong enough. In any event, simply wrap the joints in a bit of cloth, or Denzo, or anything ,or create a shield from a drinking yoghurt, or milk shake container. Better still. just keep both hands on the lever, or one hand in pocket, like the old TV technicians
