Glow Plug Light Will Not go Out

Post by Thomas M »

1991 1.6 non-turbo

No biggie, but I thought I would mention it.

Glow plug light will not go out.

I checked for normal glow plug functioning. I can hear and feel the glow plug relay engaging and disengaging. Current flows to the plugs, checked with inductive ammeter; and it turns itself off when timed out.

I pulled the relay and jiggled and tapped it. No change.

I've studied the circuit in Bentley's, but cannot figure why the panel glow plug light would stay on.

I can't figure where the 12 volts is coming from to energize it.

I can only think of putting a piece of black tape on the clear plastic in front of the light so I can't see it.

Any ideas on this one??

Thank You

Go repull the relay and pry off the cover. If your windshield leaked at one time, your relay is probably full of rusted junk causing the contacts to stay closed that energize the light.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

My 90 had the glow plug light stuck on. It wasn't the relay, and it wasn't water in the seperator under the car, so I disconnected the light by cutting the wire. ;)

I opened the glow plug relay........beautifully clean little electro-mechanical device. Spick and Span.
Haven't such nice, shiny copper since real copper pennies!!!

It started blinking today on a short drive .....! !

Not worth the worry at this time. Black tape will do the trick.

Though I do like the cut-the-wire solution.

Blinking.... that is a signal from the junky separator by the back wheel. Lots of folks bypass that leak maker (self included).
Have a nice day.

The glow plug light is just a timer light anyway. It doesn't tell you anything except make a suggestion of when to turn the key.
Many of us run a wire to from the glow plug to a light on the dash to let us know if the glow plugs are actually getting any power.
I remove the water seperators (and the check valve) on Mk2s.

My water separator has never had any detectable water in it. I've drained it a few time just to check and it was pure diesel coming out. I suppose I could pull the connector, but I will not. I can block the light with tape. An indicator light coming from the glow plug bus is an interesting idea.
