1.6 block
Well, I finally found out why my wabbit is leaking oil into the coolant. The block is cracked in at least 3 places. What are the possible chances of anyone haveing a diesel block that needs rebuilding. I just did this one about 15-20,000 miles ago. I am thinking I can get another block, bore it and put in my parts with a new set of rings and bearings. Does anyone close to ND have a block they can part with fairly cheap??

I currently have a 11mm block, but seeing as how the general concensis is that they are 'junk' I would take a 12mm instead. My cylinder head will fit on both with the exception of a hydraulic lifter engine.

I talked to a place in Minneapolis this past week that had one and they wanted $400. for it. I think I will do some more digging around. It is not real high priority just now. If I can find one for around $200 that would be great. I know a salvage yard owner that has quite a few, but I am thinking most are 1.5. Will have to do some checking on this. Need to look up bore/stroke etc before I go out there.

FWIW I have a 12mm block in my garage that looks decent but the crankshaft is bad - the keyway for the pulley wallowed out. The block appears to be fine though. I had entertained the thought of rebuilding but I have too many other projects. Shipping to the West Coast could be prohibitive though.

Seee, the 1.6s have the same crank nose/key problem as the 1.9.
I've seen this several times,.. time for the d-sprocket.
Not being in a hurry to find a block means an affordable one will probably fall in your lap.

$300 is a fair price for a German block.
People tend not to believe me, but I personally think that the German blocks are much better alloy than the Brazilian blocks (usually the 1.6 11mm blocks and the 1.6 12mm blocks uses on USA Rabbits). Every 11mm block I ever had needed a complete bore and oversize pistons regardless of mileage. I've had several German blocks that only needed a re-ring. Maybe you'll get lucky and only need a re-ring.
