Been gone, Look where it got me.

Post by hjalbert »

I have been out of touch with this forum. Not much need for it as I have not been driving a diesel VW. I have owned a raggedy 1981 dasher for a while, but not driven it, But look what I just bought. It is the most I have ever spent on a car. I am scared, and elated. I know it is alot of money, but the logic of it makes sense to me. Any way, I fly out to pick it up weekend after next. Any one else seen one so clean? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 035&rd=1,1

Indeed, a nice looking car. Looks like an 11mm job though, keep that in mind if the engine ever lets go or something. Replace with 12mm block, much better IMHO. That car was worth what you paid. I have NEVER seen a 1980 Diesel anything in that condition.

A very nice clean car.
It IS a lot of money, but,
as in everything else, you
get what you pay for.

No doubt, this beauty will
restore your confidence in
the old VW diesels, that your
previous experience somewhat
shattered.

Good luck and have a pleasant
drive home.

I have considered the 1.5 with the head bolts, If it is ever a problem I will probably opt for a TD out of a quantum or something like that. I think this car would be well worth the upgrade. But until it needs it will just stay stock. Thanks everyone for the kind words. I cannot wait to pick it up. John

Is that a low brake fluid sensor I spy? I didn't think those came along until the Mk2!

Sweet car.

1.5

Post by Fatmobile »

If it's a 1.5 it should have an extra hose going from the valve cover to the block,.. to reduce oil burning and chance of runaway.
I didn't see one on yours.
I'm starting to like the dasher.

I think I recall the hose you are talking about on my 1980 rabbit. I would not know what to think if this engine is not original.

I don't think the extra hose came from the factory, did it? I thought it was retrofitted after folks discovered the runaway problem.

hose

Post by Fatmobile »

Right, it's probably original,... this might have been a recall thing and not all owners were aware of it.
It was an afterthought,
an upgrade....
and being the first owner that was aware of it you get to do the upgrade :D
That hose and a cam splash shield should reduce oil consumption.

yup, good money=good car, have a good time driveing home- its fun to pass up a civic or camery HYBRID while getting better mileage than them! My frineds wife just picked up a 2007 civic HYBRID $25,000.00 and he only gets 40 city and 48 highway while my 22 year old golf gets 49 highway @ 65MPH or 55 highway @ 55MPH
But the HYBRID is neat to drive around on battery power alone, crazy quiet and one can adjust how much "engine breaking" goes to chargeing the battery- thats kinda neat
