training this weekend

Post by CoolAirVw »

This weekend was the Automotive Service Association's "Vision" training event and trade show, here in Kansas City.

I attended 3 classes.

1. Bosch Passenger Car Diesel by Dave Boley
2. Bosch Gasoline Direct Injection by Ryan Barr
3. Diesel Driveability by Dave Scaler

Dave Boley and Ryan Barr are trainers from the Bosch training center in Broadview IL. #1 was on common rail systems, but covered some of the changes from VE to PD to the common rail system on the new 2.0. #2 was a neat class but not diesel of course...

#3 was an awsome class that covered common rail diagnosis on powerstroke, cummins, duramax and mercedes systems on the Sprinter, international and mercedes vans. All of which is applicable to the VW common rail system as well.

Awesome stuff! Probably same classes will be offered next year, if anyone wants to attend. http://www.visionkc.com

Note: Bosch offers hands on training classes on live vehicles, in Broadview, Illinois, Whittier, CA, and maybe Daytona Beach, FL. (not sure about FL) See http://www.boschtechinfo.com. They have some online courses but I wasn't impressed with the online selection.

Dave Scaler's class is from Mechanic's Education Association from http://www.MEAtraining.com

Nope. They discussed the VE pump on the tdi, and they discussed the PD tdi but only to introduce the common rail on the 09.

No mention of good ol' IDI.

Note: My car just got a MPG best of 43.8 mpg!

I guess we're left on are own. I really hate it when companies like Ford are trying to push a $3500 Gov't grant to crush 10 year and older cars. That will really dry the parts up. They already have a car heaven program in place where they give you a grant if you fill a big engine cars with foam so it can't be rebuilt. Only in Canada. $3500x4 good by fleet not in my life time.

Ford (and just about every other car manufacturer) needs it's sales to increase to keep business going, so they are probably pretty willing to grasp at any concept to try to get more car sales. A $3500 "trade in value" for a $100 car is a good deal to some people, but I don't like the klunker laws either. California had (or has) a klunker law many years ago and there was huge outrage by a lot of the old car clubs to kill the legislation as so many good parts were going bye-bye forever and couldn't be used to fix someone elses cars.

Instead of being mad at Ford for pushing this theme, IMO, you should question the establishment and people that voted to implement that law in the first place.

I try not to get mad just even. I called the guy in charge of car heaven twice the third time my call was blocked. I did make my views know. I'm going to also make my view know about the Ford idea also. You make a good point about questioning. A lot of people figure it just a wast of time. Just recently Canada had a minority gov't elected. The other three opposition leader decided to take control of the Gov't. One of the opposition leaders was committed to separation. So many e-mail where sent to the Gov't that the computers crashed. I idea slowly lost ground. Actions can work but they have to start somewhere.

That's probably where Ford got the idea. They just added more money to the program. It's my understanding that its pretty tuff to keep an older vehicle in Germany. Where parts like rubber brake lines and ball joints have to be replaced on a time expired schedule (like 5 years). After 9 years there's a major overhaul. A lot of these car end up in eastern Europe. I've heard of a guy in Edmonton that's filling up C-can loads of them. Mostly Mercedes diesels.

I've also heard it's hard to keep an older vehicle in Europe as well.
