Re: Oil change interval

Yeah, I put 650 a week on this thing, which is why I was wondering if I could push the change interval out to 5k or not. Sounds like I'll be just fine. I have no idea what kind of mileage is on my motor, thanks to a dead odometer when I got the car, and a possibility that it's got a different motor ...

Re: Oil change interval

What royal purple synthetic oil are you using? The stuff I sell at one of the auto parts chain stores is not rated for a diesel engine. I run Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w40 in my car, and its about 20 bucks a gallon, which in my experience is a lot less than the royal purple stuff we sell. I got it at O...

Oil change interval

How long are you guys going between oil changes? Standard 3,000? I see that the oil gets pitch black pretty much instantly on a diesel motor. I'm running Royal Purple synthetic and a high quality large oil filter, but I don't want to push it, I'm ok with spending the money to do it from time to time...

Re: Bad Wabbit

Ok, now the new pump had been installed and the car was up and running again. I actually made amazingly good time on the pump replacement. I used a steering wheel puller to get the sprocket off the old pump. Put the new pump on, and was ready to time the thing Friday evening. Saturday morning I went...

Re: Bad Wabbit

Ok, so where was I.. Ahh yes, spent a fair amount of money on preventative maintenance to make sure my new commuter car would be reliable. I commute 63 miles each way to work every day, that's why I bought this car. I got a new job, looked into moving closer, decided it was cheaper to commute, and t...

Re: Another Alternator Belt Tensioner Fix? UPDATE 6.6k mi O

So it's normal to have to re-tension the alternator belt every 1000 miles? I had to do mine today, and I was baffled that it had come loose. It wasn't just a little bit loose, it was flapping in the breeze loose.

Re: Bad Wabbit

At this point I had found this forum, so some of this, even the gas tank swap, is posted here. But I'll restate it anyways, to have it all in this thread. Anyways.. I ordered a hose kit from Jack, because the coolant hoses in my engine bay looked factory original, and that's not exactly a good thing...

Bad Wabbit

Seems like I'm constantly tinkering on my '81 Diesel rabbit I picked up just over a month ago. I need a place to keep track of it all. :) I should have started a project thread a month ago when the car didn't make it home from the DPO's house and I had to have it towed the rest of the way home. Let'...

Re: tdi or idi what do you people like better???

I intend to put a TDI into my Rabbit at some point in the future.. Just need a totalled TDI car to fall into my lap for a steal of a price. In the mean time I'll probably just turbo the motor I have now.

So you didn't measure the piston protrusion? Got a gasser cam in it maybe?

Re: i've got problems '86 D na me (hyd) need some advice

I believe there are several different thickness headgaskets. You're supposed to measure how high the pistons come up, and pick a headgasket based on that.

Re: NA --> ECO Conversion + Turbo Rebuild Kit

I don't know that I'd call that test conclusive. Yeah, it seems like a bad sign, but the seals aren't meant to seal that way. They're meant to have oil pressure pressing out on them, not air pressure on the outside pushing in on them. Oil is rarely ever sucked OUT of a turbo, and even if it were, th...

Re: Freshly rebuilt pump, slightly high idle and some smoke

It wasn't what I'd call a little smoke. I could fog cars behind me at will. And the 1500rpm idle was driving me nuts.

Re: Freshly rebuilt pump, slightly high idle and some smoke

I ran my first tank of fuel through the new pump this week. I got 49mpg out of it. Then I finally went and played with that smoke screw, I did it while it was running and idling at it's usual high (1500ish RPM) idle. The second I cracked that lock nut loose the idle started to drop, I think I turned...

My first attempt at biodiesel

I had a gallon of used veggie oil on my front porch, and decided to take a stab at making bio. I made some mistakes along the way, the first one was deciding to do it, and starting to do it, and doing the research on HOW to do it from my phone on the porch as I went.. hahaha.. Still, my test batch t...
