Turns out, the brake switch is on the master cylinder, and the one near the brake pedal is for the cruise.

Is there more than one brake light switch on a 1990 Vanagon?

I've got a '90 Vanagon that has intermittent brake light problems, where the lights sometimes stay on. I took the switch apart, and cleaned it, but the lights sometimes still stick on. There is a rubber vacuum line going to it, in addition to the electrical hookup. I don't know what the vacuum line ...

I can't argue with the mileage. My 1.5 liter gets 52 mpg, and is a struggle to get it to dip below 50 with a lot of in-town driving. My gas Rabbit gets a max of 37 mpg (usually is around 35) but if you get extended in town use with the gasser, the mileage makes a more significant drop.

I've driven both 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines, and there is no need to spin the 1.5 liter any higher to get up to cruising speed. Just because an engine is smaller, doesn't necessitate revving it higher before you shift.

My point is, the final rpm at an identical speed will be the same regardless of the size of the engine, all other factors being the same.

The size of an engine has nothing to do with the rpm it has in high gear, with everything else being the same (tire size, transmission gear ratio, speed driven). A 1.5 and 1.6 liter will rpm at the identical speed.

Do not use them, as they are for a gas engine, and are stretch bolts. The 11mm diesel bolts are hex head and are not stretch bolts.

Is your accelerator cable opening the throttle completely? Could it have slipped? Adjustment clip came off?

I check it with the engine both hot and cold. When it's cold, it will twist past 45 degrees, but at full temp, it will not.

If you remove the entire waterpump with housing there is absolutely no need to remove the timing belt or the intermediate shaft pulley. Why make extra work for yourself?

After 60,000 miles on my 1.5 head with new valves, the clearance has only been reduced by maybe .0005" on a couple valves. I always put new valves in when rebuilding any cylinder head.

You can grind the buckets down, if you have to, due to grinding the shims down. The thinnest factory shim I know of is 2.8 mm, but I've ground them past that.

The price of oil has fluctuated plus or minus around the $40 mark for several weeks, so it will be interesting to see the reasons why gas will increase, if it does.

Anyone think diesel will be below gas in a few months? Reasons why?

I thought that with the change to Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel would keep diesel far higher than gas.
