mine used to bug me too, because it would flash when the temp gauge showed normal temps. i finally realized that another inch or so of coolant in the reservoir was all that it was asking for.

Looks like it's ultimately up to us to guarantee that our fuel is properly lubricated. Ever since the new fuel came out, I try to run a minimum of about 5% bio and/or powerservice in my diesel truck and now in my jetta. From what I've read on other forums, bio does provide additional lubricity and ...

Re: belt

Sounds good. Hope you can get it fixed up right. When you put the tensioner on, you tensioned it by rotating it clockwise, right? If not, that is the way its supposed to go. I just looked at a picture I took of that belt before I put the cover on, and no, I tensioned it by rotating the tensioner co...

The belt was "ridiculously" loose, I think. There was a whole lot of slop in between the cam and the pump, like you could almost twist the belt all the way around on itself. I went to around 45-50 pounds on that cam bolt, and it was very clean. I hope folks are right about that lifter, I w...

The car did seem to have slipped a tooth on the belt, and when I tried to turn the engine over by turning the pump pulley bolt with a wrench, it slipped another tooth, so I tried to get it back to normal, but it still wouldn't run. What would cause an almost brand new lifter to collapse? Do I need a...

Yeah, it is an 89 jetta that is actually pretty clean for its age. I don't want to let it go, but I also don't want this to happen again, and I am feeling pretty spooked about it now. I was SO careful putting this back together, but I have to admit that the belt/cam gear thing was a real PITA that I...

sweet solution!

You give me hope. My brand new cylinder head job slipped the belt and bent a valve 2000 miles later. I am feeling pretty bummed out and annoyed and confused about what happened.

But your refusal to give up on your rabbit is inspirational.

well, it has a bent valve. I pulled all the covers off and the timing belt was really sloppy and loose between the pump and the cam. The cam gear seems tight on the cam, the belt tensioner was snug and had not slipped, but the belt was loose. I set everything up again and was trying to get it to sta...

a primer bulb would be a huge boon to me right now. Next time I am at the boat store, I am picking one up!

I charged the battery part way back up, changed out the filter after filling the new one with clean diesel and bled some air out of the lines. The line leaving the filter was dry and empty. it tries to start but the battery is not quite up to it yet, so I left it on the charger and took a break. Nex...

I'm hoping that it is not a slipped belt, that would suck! But as it started to die, it would run smoothly for a second or two in between losing power. I will feel really dumb if it is just a filter, I think I have a spare in the trunk, but in the dark on the side of the road with a dying battery an...

no funny noises of any kind. I don't yet have the fancy timing gauge, and with $400 gone to the tow truck, it will be while longer before I do. I assumed that the timing was too retarded since it idled rough unless i pulled the advance knob out, then it idled nicely. I'll be fiddling with it today. ...

broken down already, with an expensive tow truck bill

I put a new head on this car a few weeks back. I drove it around, worked out some minor bugs and then had to go on a road trip this week. I retorqued the head yesterday, on the road, at about 1400 miles. I noticed at that time that two of the injectors that I had gone through were seeping a little b...

I did my retorque at 1400 miles and it was tougher than the initial warm retorque, but not bad. 600 miles later, my engine quit running on the highway and I got a $400 tow truck ride to a friend's house. i will look at it tomorrow, and see if I can figure out what is up. Oil and coolant are both cle...
